The Story
In 2014, Sports Broadcaster Jerry Schemmel decided he wanted to fulfill one of his long-time cycling dreams. He was determined to enter, finish and win the world’s most grueling bicycle race – The Race Across America – a seven-day, 3,000-mile trek across 12 states from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans.

He started by recruiting his friend to compete with him in the two-man race – four-time Iron Man triathlete Brad Cooper, and together, the team decided to document every aspect of their adventure. They called upon longtime friend and Colorado film producer Martin Butler of Vision West films to capture every leg of the race on film. And they all agreed the project should come with a God-honoring purpose – to raise awareness of the plight of orphans in Haiti. And that was the birth of the dream for the documentary film, Godspeed: The Race Across America.

It would turn out to be no ordinary cycling film. The brutal reality of two middle-aged men, racing as a relay-team, around the clock, for an entire week, including the punishing obstacles and life-draining assault on their bodies, minds, and characters required something many world-class athletes depend on: God’s protection and help. Filmmaker Butler recruited the talented cinematography and drone flying skills of his son, Davis Butler, who joined him in documenting every moment of the seven-day competition.
Filming and editing are now complete, and we have distribution through Fathom Events to show Godspeed in at least 644 theaters across America on May 22nd!
What We Need & What You Get
- We've set a goal of $200,000 to help get the word out. With the film already shot, edited, and prepared for theaters, we want to make sure those theaters aren't empty.

Risks & Challenges
First off, the film is finished and will be hitting theaters on May 22nd in at least 644 theaters across America. That part is out of the way and we're working with Fathom to see if we can add more locations (and possibly added dates) to the theatrical event.
However, depending on ticket sales, sometimes the theaters may shift or be removed from the list. Usually, this is due to not having sales at a location leading up to the release, but with us running this IndieGoGo campaign we're going to be showing the ticket sales for those locations very early in the game to prove that the theaters you live near need to stay on the list.
If a theater you've purchased a ticket from winds up being removed for some reason, we will work with you to make sure you receive something of equal value or see if there is another theater close enough that you would be willing to attend there.
